Christkindle Markts (Christmas Markets) in Salzburg, Austria and Nuremberg, Germany - Nov-Dec 2024
“This is how Christmas should feel. Full of hope, happiness and new beginnings. Full of love, for those we’re with, those we miss and those we’ve found. This is the best feeling, ever! I don’t know what the future holds but, right now, it feels full of promise and excitement.” -- Jo Thomas
Last week, we traveled to Austria and Germany for the Christmas Markets. So much to see and lots of stalls/booths to pursue, and of course a bit of shopping.
Day 1 - Salzburg - After landing we traveled by train, bus and foot to our hotel, dropped off our luggage and walked downtown to enjoy a meal. Then, back to our hotel for a nap and a drink before going out that evening to see the markets.
Day 2 - Salzburg - In the morning, we hiked around the city on a Christmas Advent Tour (www.Salzburg.info), then off to the local brewery -- Steigl -- for a tour and tasting, and back to the markets that evening, to shop and enjoy the gluwein (spiced wine)
Day 3 - Oberndorf/Salzburg - we took a local train to the town of Oberndorf to visit the Stille Nacht Kapelle (Silent Night Chapel), where - yep, you guessed it - Silent Night was written. That afternoon, we found a very small Italian place and enjoyed pizza and drinks, before going back to the very crowded markets.
Day 4 - Salzburg - We took another walking tour recommended by Salzburg.info - Instagramable Salzburg. We were really off the beaten path and hiked many of the trails to see the beautiful landscape and snow covered mountains. Then, headed back to town to see the "Sound of Music," Mirabell Gardens.
Day 4 (evening) - Date Night! - Dinner and the Salzburger Festungskonzerte (Salzburg Fortress Concert). Great company, great food, and great music! What an awesome evening!
Day 5 - Left a rainy Salzburg and traveled to Nuremberg
Day 6-7 -Nuremberg- loved the markets and enjoyed the food, gluwein, and procured a few gifts.
Trip home - We took the long route due to heavy turbulence, providing us a beautiful view of Greenland.
5 Tips
Salzburg is a beautiful city, and there are many areas with markets. The main market is a must see, but talk to the locals ro find the smaller markets for a more interesting adventure and gifts.
If you can walk/hike - definitely do so, hike the Instagramable Salzburg tour - quite beautiful and educational
Take a 1/2 day trip to Oberndorf to see the Stille Nacht Kapelle (Silent Night Chapel).
Dinner and a Concert at the Festung (Fortress) was well worth the price, and we highely recommend checking this out!
Nurmberg Christmas Market - well worth the trip with great food, Gluwein, and more authentic gifts; oh! and make reservations for dinner - it was a challenge finding any place to eat.
