I'm Getting Antsy - last minute trip to Germany, Luxembourg, and France via Bike & Barge (Part 2)
Last week, I shared our entire Bike & Barge trip, so this week will be short with a few tips.
Definitely take time to visit Cohem, Germany. It is a charming town and the wine is excellent, especially if you like White and/or Rose’.
For the Bike and Barge, try to book early and get a room at mid-front of the barge. Some were near the generator at the back and that was quite loud. We were directly under the bar and the floors squeezed when ever anyone walked up there. Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep the first couple of nights. Of course, if noises do not bother you or if you are typically the last one to sleep, it may not matter.
As for food, if you are picky (like Jack) or have dietary preferences (like me) — I’m Gluten intollerant — you may want to bring some extra snacks. Breakfast and dinners were good, but there were not a lot of choices to make a sandwich for a picnic during the day for lunch.
We had normal bicycles, which were top quality, but if you do not bike a lot, consider an E-bike, it will make your trip more enjoyable. For the most part, biking along the Moselle was flat, but there are some hills and you really need to know how to change gears and have some bike legs to feel good the entire week.
Bring bike shorts and bike gloves (and a rain jacket). The seats are comfortable, but bike shorts are a must when biking for 6 days straight, and it will likely rain at least one day during the week.
Lastly, enjoy the company of your new barge colleagues. We enjoyed talking with everyone, especially our Canadian and Austraillan voyagers. Jack also had the opportunity to practice his German with a Swiss couple. Everyone was so much fun and we had a fantastic time!
